Lakefront Park & Bird Sanctuary
at the Hammond MarinaDiscover the Hammond Lakefront Park & Bird Sanctuary, a serene 600-meter wooded wildlife refuge located on the southern shores of Lake Michigan. Situated between the Hammond Marina to the east and the modern Data Center to the west, this hidden gem is a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
Despite its industrial surroundings, the sanctuary is a haven for local bird species and serves as a crucial rest stop for migratory birds during their journeys to and from Canada, Mexico, and Central America in both spring and fall.
Explore the rustic footpath that winds through the sanctuary, offering birdwatchers a unique opportunity to spot a diverse array of species rarely seen in other parts of Northwest Indiana. The Indiana Audubon Society notes that visitors may encounter bird families such as wrens, thrushes, vireos, warblers, and sparrows. During migration seasons, keep an eye out for specialty species like Mourning Warblers, Piping Plovers, Laughing Gulls, and more.
The Bird Sanctuary welcomes the public, with access available through the turnstile on the park's east end, near the Marina parking lot. Embark on a journey into nature's tranquility at Hammond Lakefront Park & Bird Sanctuary.
